Championship records tumbled on Day 9 of the 2019 IAAF World Athletics Championships in Doha.
In the women’s 5000m, Kenyan Hellen Obiri retained her world championships title with a new championship record of 14:26.72. Margaret Kipkemboi came through to overtake Konstanze Klosterhalfen in the home straight for silver clocking a personal best of 14:27.49, with the German taking bronze in 14:28.43.
Just one centimetre separated the three medallists in the greatest men’s shot put contest in history. Ryan Crouser set a new championship record with his opening throw of 22.36m. By the end of the night, that was just the equal-seventh best distance. Joe Kovacs finished with the gold after a massive 22.91m throw. Crouser and Tom Walsh, the pre-championship favourite, had to settle for silver and bronze with both launching the shot out to 22.90m.
The star-studded USA men’s 4x100m team, led out by 100m champion Christian Coleman and anchored by 200m champion Noah Lyles, were no match for the rest of the field. A time of 37.10 won USA the gold, with Great Britain & NI claiming silver in a new European record of 37.34, and Japan setting a new Asian record of 37.43 to take bronze.
The women’s 4x100m saw individual 100m champion Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce add another gold to her collection. The Jamaican team proved unbeatable, winning in 41.44, ahead of Great Britain & NI, led by 200m champion Dina Asher-Smith, in silver and USA in bronze.
The women’s 1500m saw Sifan Hassan complete an unprecedented double as she added this gold to her 10,000m crown, obliterating the 1500m championship record and climbing to sixth on the all-time list with a 3:51.95 run. Reigning Olympic champion Faith Kipyegon claimed a Kenyan record of 3:54.22 in silver, while bronze went to Ethiopia’s Gudaf Tsegay.
Yulimar Rojas won back-to-back women’s triple jump titles in impressive style. The Venezuelan leapt out to 15.37m, just four centimetres shy of her personal best, to claim gold, ahead of Jamaican Shanieka Ricketts in silver and Colombia’s Caterine Ibarguen in bronze.
