Tar Heel Trio Named To WXC All-ACC Academic Team

A trio of Tar Heels has been named to the All-Atlantic Coast Conference Academic team for women’s cross country, announced Wednesday afternoon by the league. Brynn Brown, Sasha Neglia and Natalie Tyner were selected for the team, which considers both academic and athletic performance during the 2021 season.

All three earned All-NCAA Southeast Region honors in 2021 and competed as part of the Carolina team at NCAA Championships.

Brown, from Denton, Texas, is majoring in neuroscience. The 2021 ACC Freshman of the Year, she won her first collegiate meet, the Battle in Beantown, and went on to place sixth at ACC Championships, 13th at NCAA Regionals and 65th at NCAA Championships.

Neglia, from Kingsport, Tenn., is majoring in statistics and analytics. Also named to the All-ACC Academic Team as a true freshman in 2020, she placed 20th at ACC Championships this year to earn all-conference honors for the second year in a row. Neglia was the 2020 ACC Freshman of the Year, giving the Tar Heels back-to-back honors.

Tyner, from Wilmington, N.C., is majoring in exercise and sport science. In her first season of cross country competition for the Tar Heels, she earned All-Southeast Region recognition by placing 19th at regionals, following a 34th-place finish at ACC Championships.
NC State’s Kelsey Chmiel was named the ACC Women’s Cross Country Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

The ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards were established in September of 2007 to be awarded annually to the top junior or senior student-athlete in their respective sports. Candidates for the awards must have maintained a 3.0-grade point average for their careers, as well as a 3.0 for each of the last two semesters.

Minimum academic requirements for selection to the All-ACC Academic Team are a 3.0-grade point average for the previous semester and a 3.0 cumulative average during one’s academic career. Athletic achievements during the most recent season are also considered in selecting the All-ACC Academic Team.
