EAST LANSING, Mich. – The Michigan State men’s and women’s cross country teams, along with five individual Spartan runners, were honored with All-Academic distinction by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA), the organization announced Thursday.
Women’s cross country seniors Jenna Magness and Lynsie Gram, redshirt junior Makayla Perez and freshman Kaitlyn Hynes were named All-Academic Athletes, while redshirt junior Fraser Wilson was named an All-Academic Athlete on the men’s side. Magness and Gram earned the recognition for the third time in their careers, while Perez and Wilson are getting the honors for the second time.
Both the men’s and women’s squads also received accolades as USTFCCCA All-Academic Teams, the 17th-straight season for the women and second-consecutive year for the men.
In order to qualify for All-Academic distinction, student-athletes must have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.25 on a 4.0 scale and finish in the top-25 at the NCAA Regional Championships or as an All-American at the NCAA Championships. For the team honor, the squad must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, including the most recent grading period.
Overall, 83 runners from 40 different institutions were named Men’s All-Academic Athletes for their efforts during the 2021 season, while there were 114 athletes from 58 different institutions on the women’s side. Additionally, there were 168 different women’s programs and 150 different men’s programs named as All-Academic Teams.
