BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (theACC.com) – Three national championships and 12 total podium finishes highlighted performances by Atlantic Coast Conference student-athletes at the 2022 NCAA Division I Indoor Track and Field Championships.
Seeded No. 1 in their respective events, Florida State’s Trey Cunningham (men’s 60 meter hurdles) and Virginia Tech’s Lindsey Butler (women’s 800 meters) and Rachel Baxter (women’s pole vault) lived up to their billing with gold medal performances.
Cunningham took the NCAA title with a personal best time of 7.38 that ranks as the second-fastest in NCAA history and shattered his own school and ACC records. Baxter’s winning pole vault of 4.62 meters (15’1.75”) also set a new ACC record and Butler set a Birmingham CrossPlex facility record with her winning time of 2:01.37 in the 800.
Other highlights include a pair of silver medalists by NC State’s Katelyn Tuohy in both the women’s 3K and 5K, and additional second-place finishes by Duke’s Erin Marsh in the women’s pentathlon and the Notre Dame men’s distance medley relay team.
In addition, the ACC was represented by bronze medalist Julia Fixsen of Virginia Tech in pole vault, and boasted fourth-place (podium) finishes by Florida State’s Adriaan Wildschutt (men’s 5K) and Lauren Ryan (women’s 3K) and Notre Dame’s Rachel Tanczos (women’s weight throw) and Jadin O’Brien (women’s pentathlon).
Two teams placed among the top 10 in women’s team scoring – Virginia Tech sixth with 29 points and NC State tied for ninth with 25. The finishes were the highest ever in NCAA Women’s Indoors for both programs.
Notre Dame’s 11 points placed 17th, and Duke tied for 18th with 10. Florida State led all ACC teams in men’s scoring with 17 points, tying for 13th place.
ACC student-athletes earned All-America status in 54 events at this year’s NCAA Indoor Championship, including first-team honors in 26 events.
