Sydney Seymour Breaks School Record, Wins Women's 5,000-Meter


PHILADELPHIA – Sydney Seymour lit up the Franklin Field track Friday night as she won the College Women’s 5,000-meter at the 126th Penn Relays.

The senior runner crossed the finish line at 15:36.00 to break the Tennessee school record in the event. Seymour toppled the 40-year-old record previously held by Kathy Bryant with a time of 15:37.73 set in 1982.

Rachel Sutliff and Callie Tucker also ran in the women’s 5,000m, with Sutliff finishing in 16:43.35 and Tucker setting a personal best at 16:56.42.

TENNESSEE STEEPLECHASE

UT earned a pair of fourth-place finishes in the men’s and women’s 3,000-meter steeplechase courtesy of Alex Crigger and Katie Thronson.

In the men’s race, Crigger finished fourth in a time of 8:54.05, while Thronson placed fourth in the women’s race at 10:09.45. Both are NCAA regional qualifying times.

Kayla Gholar also ran in the women’s steeple race, getting across the finish line in 10:54.91.

HAYDEN OPENS IN HAMMER

Sophomore Chandler Hayden opened the 126th Penn Relays for Tennessee, competing in the College Women’s Hammer Throw Championship. Hayden placed sixth with a throw of 59.99m (196-10).

AROUND THE TRACK

Kyla Robinson-Hubbard, Conner Hawkins, Eli Nahom and Karl Thiessen were also in action on Friday. Robinson-Hubbard competed in the first track event for UT this weekend, placing 12th in the women’s 400m hurdles championship at 1:00.34.

Hawkins represented the Orange & White in the men’s 1,500m and got around the oval in 3:51.32 to place 14th overall.

Thiessen and Nahom closed out the night for the Vols as they ran in the men’s 5,000m. Thiessen finished at 14:08 and Nahom set a personal best at 14:21.41.
