Women’s 4x800 Relay Sets School Record to Cap Off Successful Penn Relays


PHILADELPHIA – The Penn State track and field teams capped off a stellar showing at the 126th Penn Relays by collecting a championship victory wheel in the women’s 4×800 Championship of America race on the final day of action at Penn’s Franklin Field.

The Nittany Lions return to State College having won two wheels and five event victories throughout the three-day competition.

The women’s 4×800 relay team won the women’s 4×800 Championship of America race with a program-record setting time of 8:24.49. The quartet of Victoria Vanriele (2:08.37), Rachel Gearing (2:04.27), Madaline Ullom (2:06.92), and Victoria Tachinski (2:04.95) broke the previous record time of 8:25.49 set in 2017. The championship victory was the second wheel won by Penn State during the weekend.  

In the men’s race, the relay team of Yukichi Ishii, Olivier Desmeules, Darius Smallwood and Domenic Perretta finished in second place with a time of 7:17.86, the ninth-fastest in Penn State history.

In the individual track events, Yasmin Brooks finished third in the college women’s 100m hurdles championship finals with a time of 13.32.

Senior Brandon Hontz competed in the Olympic development men’s mile run elite race, finishing third with a mile time of 4:04.63.

On the field, Breana Gambrell finished second in the college women’s long jump championship with a leap of 6.27m (20-7).

Luke Knipe earned silver in the college men’s pole vault championship after clearing 5.22m (17-1.5). In the women’s event, Hailey Zurich had a top-three finish after clearing a height of 4.03m (13-2.5) to place third.

Lance Hamilton placed third in the college men’s triple jump championship with a personal-best jump of 15.78m (51-9.25), which currently ranks as the seventh-best mark in program history.

In the women’s javelin championship, Madison Smith came in fourth with a throw of 50.38m (165-3). Mallory Kauffman finished sixth in the women’s shot put championship with her best throwing traveling 16.42m (53-10.5).

UP NEXT

The Nittany Lions will remain in Happy Valley next weekend to close out the regular season, as the team is set to host their lone outdoor home meet of the season Friday with the Jim Thorpe Invitational.
