Eugene, Ore. – The UCLA women took center stage on Day Two of the NCAA Championships, advancing in the 4x400m relay and setting a program record in the 4x100m relay. Senior Shae Anderson will also be competing in the 400m after running a season-best time in the qualifying round.
Catherine Leger, Shae Anderson, Makenzy Pierre-Webster and Kate Jendrezak competed in the 4x400m relay, finishing third in heat two and seventh overall to qualify for Saturday afternoon’s final, which will contest at 4:51 p.m. The team ran a season-best, clocking in at 3:29.17, the seventh-fastest time in program history. This is the second-consecutive year that the Bruin 4×400 relay squad qualified for the final. Last season, the relay team of Meleni Rodney, Pierre-Webster, Jendrezak and Anderson set a school record of 3:25.01 en route to a third-place finish at the NCAA Championships.
Anderson qualified for the final in the 400m after placing sixth with her collegiate-best time of 50.94 in semifinal heat 1. She will compete for the national title on Saturday at 3:32 p.m. Anderson entered the NCAAs with a season-best time of 51.43 and raced a personal-best 50.48 at the 2020 Olympic Trials.
The 4x100m relay team of Leger, Pierre-Webster, Doane and Anderson finished fifth in heat one of the semifinals, clocking a time of 43.39 and setting a new program record at UCLA. They finished 11th overall and earned second-team All-America honors.
The Top 16 finishes in all three women’s events on Friday gave every UCLA athlete competing at the NCAA Championships All-America honors in 2022..The two Bruin men competing on Wednesday – juniors Ismail Turner and Cameron Reynolds – earned second-team All-America honors in the 400m.
The women will conclude competition in the NCAA Championship Finals on Saturday at Hayward Field. Anderson will compete individually in the 400m at 3:32 p.m., and the 4×400 relay squad will close out the meet at 4:51 p.m. The championships are scheduled to be broadcast on ESPN.
