Kevin Brown Named Head Coach of USATF NACAC Men’s Senior Team – University of South Carolina Athletics

Kevin Brown was named as the head coach of the USATF men’s team for this summer’s NACAC Senior Championships, the USATF announced.

COLUMBIA—Kevin Brown was named as the head coach of the USATF men’s team for this summer’s NACAC Senior Championships, the USATF announced.

Brown, who coaches the men’s sprints, relays, pole vault and combined events for the Gamecocks, served on the USATF NACAC U23 staff in 2016 and has helped coach US teams in international competition since 2003.

“To be selected is definitely an honor,” Brown said. “There’s a committee and then you’re nominated, and people have to vote on it. I was excited to get nominated and chosen by my peers on that committee.”

The NACAC Senior Championships are set for Aug. 19-21 in Freeport, Grand Bahamas.

Brown said the pool of athletes he gets to choose from as the head coach is filled with athletes who did not qualify for the World Athletics Championships. Brown said some athletes that make Worlds also might be available based on their personal training schedules.

NACAC is made up of countries from North America, Central America and the Caribbean regions. Standout track and field nations in the organization include the United States, Jamaica, Canada, and Trinidad and Tobago.

Brown said the head coaching spot brings a different role from the one he is in at South Carolina.

“These athletes all have personal coaches and those coaches will send me those plans,” Brown said. “They will contact me and give me the cues to use with their athletes. I’m not designing their workout plans, but I’m emphasizing what their coaches want them to do. It takes a lot of communication between the athletes and their coaches and just trying to emphasize those things.

“We’ll be competing against a lot of the top countries in this association, so it’ll be fun.”
