Marsh to Compete in Thorpe Cup

DURHAM – Recent Duke graduate Erin Marsh will represent the United States this weekend as the former Blue Devil track and field standout gets set to compete in the women’s heptathlon at the 15th annual Thorpe Cup July 9-10 at St. Mark’s School of Texas in Dallas.

Along with Marsh, Team USA’s roster includes unattached competitors Alyssa Brooks-Johnson and current Duke volunteer assistant coach Sarah Glidden, Allie Jones (Stanford), Callie Jones (Texas Tech), Cheyenne Williamson (Saginaw Valley State) and Melanie Winters (Asics).

Saturday’s slate features four heptathlon events, beginning with the 100m hurdles slated for 10 a.m. ET. The high jump (10:40 a.m.), shot put (12:30 p.m.) and 200m dash (1:30 p.m.) close out day one. Sunday events commence at 1 p.m., with the long jump, followed by the javelin (2 p.m.) and 800m (3 p.m.).

A multi-events specialist during her time with the Blue Devils, Marsh wrapped up her stellar Duke career with a third-place finish and All-America First Team honors at the NCAA Outdoor Championships – the highest of her career. The Buford, Ga., native’s season also featured ACC individual event championships in the indoor 4x400m relay and 60m hurdles and the outdoor heptathlon. Marsh’s titles in the 60m hurdles and heptathlon made her the first Duke woman to claim the gold medal in those respective events.

The 16-time All-ACC selection graduated as the school-record holder in the 60m hurdles (8.06 seconds), pentathlon (4,383 points) and heptathlon (5,946 points). Additionally, she set six combined top-five indoor and outdoor program marks.

The Thorpe Cup is an international track and field competition between USA and Germany. Teams are composed of up to seven men and seven women who compete in the decathlon and heptathlon. Athletes receive a predetermined number of points based upon their performances in each of the events in the decathlon and heptathlon. The top five men’s and top three women’s scores are added together to determine the overall men’s and women’s team winners.
