White and Severini Named United Soccer Coaches NCAA Divsion I Defenders to Watch List

EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State women’s soccer players Kelly Severini and Samantha White were named to the NCAA Division I Defenders to Watch list by the United Soccer Coaches.

Michigan State was the only Division I school to have two players represented. The duo join Wisconsin’s Aidan McConnell as the only representatives from the Big Ten.

The lists are being compiled and released for the first time this season by the Division I All-America Committees to promote college soccer leading up to the official start date for the regular season later this month. The lists include United Soccer Coaches All-Americans and first or second team All-Region players from 2021, who are scheduled to return for the 2022 season.

White earned second-team region honors as a defender last season for MSU. Having started every game in 2021, she continued her streak of making a start in every game of her Spartan career, totaling 67 so far. White recorded 1,540 minutes on the field this season, the most minutes of any field player. She was a large part of a Spartan backfield that allowed just 12 goals to score from opponents, the third-least in the league and 29th in the NCAA.

At Hartford last season, Severini had an impressive debut campaign with the Hawks. Starting all 16 games, she was second on the team in both goals (4) and assists (3). Logging 1,445 minutes, Severini also anchored a defense that led the America East in goals-against average (0.65) and was tied for third in shutouts (7) last season.

The Spartans continue exhibition action on Saturday, Aug. 13 against DePaul at 1 p.m. at DeMartin Stadium. Admission is free.
