Contreras Set to Compete for Puerto Rico at NACAC Championships

University of Louisville track and field athlete Jorge Contreras has been selected as one of 21 delegates to represent Puerto Rico in the 2022 NACAC Championships. Contreras will compete in the shot put during the competition set to take place from August 19-21 in the Bahamas.

The NACAC (North American, Central American, and Caribbean) Championships is a continental track and field meet that began in 2007, with this year representing the fourth running of the meet. This year’s NACAC Championships also provides the participating athletes with the possibility for direct qualification in the 2023 World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Hungary.

In June 2022, the native of Caguas, Puerto Rico won the Puerto Rican national title in shot put at the FAPUR National Championship with a throw of 17.98m (59-0). During the 2021-22 collegiate season, Contreras was one of four Louisville athletes to qualify in two events for the NCAA East Region Preliminary Round in Bloomington, Indiana, where he placed 21st in the shot put with a personal-best heave of 18.28m (59-11.75) and also competed in the discus throw.

Contreras also earned second team all-conference honors last season in both shot put and discus throw at the ACC Championships, including a personal-best toss in the discus measuring 53.81m (176-6). He will be entering his third season throwing for the Cardinals in the 2022-23 campaign.
