MINNEAPOLIS — The University of Minnesota track and field had two representatives at the 2022 Commonwealth Games held in Birmingham, England from July 28 to August 8. Kion Benjmain brought back a silver medal as a member of the Trinidad & Tobago 4x100m relay team while Akilah Lewis also competed with Trinidad.

Benjamin’s effort was vital for his relay team’s performance, running the third leg in the opening round the team of Jerod Elcock, Eric Harrison Jr. and Akanni Hislop finished second in their heat to automatically qualify for the final in a time of 38.84, a season best. The next day Benjamin and his squad matched their second-place qualifying finish with a silver medal performance. The only change was Kyle Greaux replacing Hislop with Benjamin still running the third leg for the team that finished as the runner-up to the home team of England. The team finished with a slightly better time at 38.70, 0.35 seconds behind the winning team’s 38.35.

Lewis was the third leg for her home nation in the qualifying round, helping the team finish with a season-best time of 43.48 and finished fourth in their heat, qualifying to the final. Lewis did not run the final where Trinidad finished sixth overall with a time of 43.86.
