Cross Country Set to Open 2022 Season


TEMPE-  Sun Devil Cross Country is ready to get the year going. ASU is scheduled to go to five events this season, with the first meet of the year kicking off September 17 in Riverside, California. ASU returns a roster that features nine NCAA XC regional qualifiers from the 2021 season including a first-time outdoor track All-American in Dayton Carlson. Ryun Godfrey has taken the helm of the cross country and distance programs, and he’s joined by assistant coach Ryan Ray and volunteer assistant coach Tanner Brown.
 
Coach Godfrey came to ASU in July after eight years at Kansas State. His resumé includes over 30 conference titles and more than 20 program records, and he’s overseen more than 40 All-America honors between Division I and Division II. Ray spent the 2020-21 season as a volunteer coach with ASU before going down south to coach for The University of Arizona for the 2021-22 season. Ray was the assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for both cross country and track last year. In his lone season he coached Grace Driskill to a school record in the 3000S and recruited one the best classes in the nation, signing several student-athletes ranked in the national top-10, top-20 and top-50
 
Sun Devils cross country makes their first trip of the season to Riverside, California to compete in the UC Riverside Invitational. The invitation takes place on September 17 and starts at 7:15 a.m. PDT. Following the invitational, Sun Devils will compete in Tucson on September 30. The times are still to be determined.
