Five Things to Know: UW opens season at home


MADISON, Wis. – The Wisconsin women’s cross country team begins its 2022 season by hosting the Badger Open on Thursday at the Zimmer Cross Country Championship Course. Racing begins at 5:30 p.m. with the women’s 5K while the men will compete at 6 p.m. in a 6K race at the site of the 2024 NCAA Cross Country Championship.

1. THE BADGERS ARE BACK: The Badgers are ready for action as Thursday’s race will be the first of eight races Wisconsin is set to compete in, including the eagerly anticipated Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational Presented by Under Armour on Oct. 14

2. A LOOK BACK: The Badgers finished last season on a high note taking second at the Big Ten Championships and second at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional. UW concluded the 2021 campaign with a 12th finish at the NCAA Championship. The Badgers finished first or second and five of the seven minutes they competed at last year. 

3. IN THE RANKS: UW open the season in the third spot in the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Great Lakes Regional rankings and a 11th-place ranking in the USTFCCCA National Coaches’ Poll. UW ranks second among Big Ten Conference teams in the national poll. 

4. MARK YOUR CALENDARS: The Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational Presented by Under Armour is set to take place on Friday, Oct. 14. The women’s race will feature 37 different schools, including 25 that appeared in the preseason USTFCCCA National Coaches’ Poll.  

5. UP NEXT: Following the Badger Open, Wisconsin will travel to Minneapolis, Minnesota, for the Roy Griak Invitational on Sept. 23. The women’s race starts at 10:30 a.m. at Les Bolstad Golf Course.
