COLUMBUS, Ohio – After winning the Big Ten Preview last Friday, Ohio State junior cross country runner Addie Engel has been named the USTFCCCA National Athlete of the Week by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.
She is the first from Ohio State to earn the national athlete of the week award from the USTFCCA during cross country season.
Engel, from Springfield, Ohio, and a Central Catholic product, came from behind to win the 6K race in Ann Arbor, which included five other Big Ten teams. She closed a 15.8-second gap at the 2-mile split to pass two Michigan runners for the victory in 20:54.4, besting second place by less than 1.2 seconds.
It was Engel’s second straight race victory and the third of her Buckeye career. The All-Big Ten selection has finished in the Top 25 in the nine races she has run with her teammates, including six Top 10 placings. She was fourth at the Big Ten Championships and third at the Great Lakes Regional Championships last season, earning an individual berth into the NCAA Championships.
