EAST LANSING, Mich. — Michigan State men’s and women’s cross country are set to host the 2022 Auto-Owners Insurance Spartan Invitational on Friday, Sept. 16. Friday’s race, held at Forest Akers East Golf Course, will be the 41st edition of the meet.
The women’s 6k begins at 11 a.m., while the men’s 8k takes place at 11:40 a.m. The meet will also feature 10 scholastic races, beginning at 12:20 p.m.
“We’re thrilled to host this year’s Spartan Invite,” said Spartans head coach Lisa Breznau. “We couldn’t pull off this event without the work and time of this athletic department, Playmakers, and the University community. Thank you to everyone in advance of tomorrow’s meet. Special thanks to our Director of Operations and meet manager, Rebekah Smeltzer-Pickard, as well as Andy and Tim Marsh from Playmakers.”
Friday’s meet will be the third competition of the season for the Spartan men and second for the women. The men most recently finished second at last week’s Big Ten Preview Meet, led by graduate student Abdi-Fetah Ahmed who placed second overall. Junior Andrew Nolan also recorded a top-10 finish in seventh, while Division II All-American graduate transfer CarLee Stimpfel finished fourth for the Spartans running unattached.
The Spartan women will make their second appearance of the season after competing at the Jeff Drenth Memorial Invitational on Sept. 2. Sophomore Olivia Millen finished first for the Spartans, crossing the finish line in 12th. Millen recorded a 5k time of 18:54.9 to lead Michigan State to a third-place team finish.
Both teams earned national rankings in the most recent USTFCCCA NCAA Division I Cross Country Coaches Poll, with the men coming in at No. 30 and women at No. 22.
The team’s only home race of the fall, the Spartan Invitational gives Michigan State an opportunity to run on the team’s home course in front of family and friends in East Lansing. The meet will also serve as a season opener for many of Michigan State’s cross country athletes.
“Our men’s and women’s squads are ready to continue the tone for the season by being a teammate and being in it for the fight. It’s…
