Bhopal, September 19: Haryana’s rising Javelin Thrower Deepika and Pole Vaulter Vanshika Ghanghas broke National U18 girls records on their way to victory on the concluding day of the 17th AFI National Youth Athletics Championships at the Tatya Tope Stadium here on Monday.
Deepika, who is now making it a habit of breaking barriers, threw the Javelin 51.84m to improve on her own National mark of 51.37m set in Panchkula earlier this year and Kumari Sharmila’s meet mark of 47.09m set in Bengaluru in 2012. She also met the qualifying standard for the Asian Youth Championships to be held in Kuwait next month.
Vanshika Ghanghas also rewrote National and Meet Records with a 3.56m clearance to win the girls’ Pole Vault crown. Nivya Antony held both marks earlier, pegging the National record at 3.55m in Mangalagiri in 2017; and the meet record at 3.32m in Hyderabad that year. Nitika Anup Akare (Madhya Pradesh) joined Vanishka Ghanghas as a qualifier for Kuwait.
Among the boys, it was Almas Kabir’s day. The West Bengal sprinter won the 200m in 21.68 seconds for a new Meet Record, surpassing the 21.87 set by Shanmugha Srinivas in Raipur, in 2019.
Jerome Sanjay Nishanth (Tamil Nadu) swept to the top of the podium in the boys 400m Hurdles, taking Murad Sirman and Vishnu Sri (Tamil Nadu) along as qualifiers for the Asian Youth Championship. Similarly, in the boys Javelin Throw, Arjun (Delhi) and Himanshu Mishra (Madhya Pradesh) made the grade.
Amit Chaudhry (Uttar Pradesh) in the boys 1500m, Mohammed Aman (Uttar Pradesh) in Hammer Throw and Mohammed Atta Sazid (Haryana) in Long Jump were others who met the qualifying mark for the Asian Youth Championships.
Ekta Pradeep Dey (Madhya Pradesh) and Sakshi Sargar (Maharashtra) in the 2000m Steeplechase:. Divyasri (Tamil Nadu) in Triple Jump and Ruthika Saravanan (Tamil Nadu), who overcame the shock of making a false start in the 100m semifinals to win the 200m final in 24.70 seconds were the other girls who reached the qualifying standards.
