SEATTLE – The end of October means the first Pac-12 Championship of the academic year is at hand. The Husky cross country teams are set to battle on Friday morning for conference supremacy at the USC-hosted meet in Riverside, Calif. Pac-12 Networks will provide live coverage of the two races starting at 8:40 a.m.
The races will be held Friday at the UC Riverside Agricultural Operations Course. The women’s 6,000-meters will be up first at 8:40 a.m. followed by the men’s 8,000-meters at 9:40 a.m.
The 19th-ranked Husky women’s team comes in seeded fifth, with four Pac-12 women’s teams all ranked from No. 9-12. Stanford is ninth, Utah tenth, Colorado eleventh, and Oregon twelfth, making for no clear favorite on the women’s side.
The 20th-ranked UW men are fourth in the pecking order, with No. 1 Stanford favored, followed by No. 10 Colorado, No. 15 Oregon, and the Huskies.
Last fall in Utah, the women placed fourth led by Haley Herberg in eighth-place. The men were third, with Brian Fay and Kieran Lumb finishing 9-10. Colorado took both team titles last year.
Herberg and Fay are both back for the Dawgs again this Friday, but with just one combined race between them so far this fall. Both 2022 NCAA Outdoor Track First Team All-Americans, Herberg will be making her 2022 debut on Friday, while Fay opened up at the Wisconsin Invitational, leading the Huskies in that race.
Along with Herberg, nine more women will run in Riverside. Seniors Anna Gibson, Madison Heisterman, juniors Andrea Markezich and Carley Thomas, sophomores Sophie O’Sullivan and Naomi Smith, and freshmen Ella Borsheim, Chloe Foerster, and Sophia Nordenholz.
The men will run eight including seniors Fay, Sam Ellis, Isaac Green and Ed Trippas, and sophomores Sam Affolder, Leo Daschbach, Luke Houser, and Joe Waskom.
After Pac-12s, the Huskies will be back home in two weeks to host the NCAA West Regional Championships at Chambers Creek Regional Park on Nov. 11, where national championship bids will be up for grabs.
