Champlain Valley Girls Are State Champions Once Again In Vermont

By Mary Albl of DyeStat

The Champlain Valley girls cross country team returned to the top of the podium, a spot they are all too familiar with. A year after their 12-year winning streak as Division I champions came to an end, the Redhawks dominated the Division 1 girls race at the Vermont High School Championships at Thetford Academy.

Sophomore Alice Kredell’s first-place finish (19:49) led the Redhawks, who placed five scorers in the top 10 and had all seven finish in the top 22 for 27 points. Second place belonged to Essex with 75 points.

Senior Matthew Servin of Champlain Valley made it a program sweep individually as he covered the 5,000-meter course in 16:36.7. St. Johnsbury defended its title with five runners in the top 15 to score 44 points and edge out CVU (48 points).

In DII, the U-32 girls and boys swept the team titles. The boys held off Montpelier — 52-54 — despite a first-place finish from Montpelier senior Avery Smart (16:55.6). It was U-32’s seventh title in a row. In the girls race, U-32 sophomore Ginger Long won in 20:38.9, as five runners placed in the top 12 for the team.

In DIII, it was a near-perfect performance from the Craftsbury boys team as they tallied 18 points with sophomore Charlie Kehler leading the way with a victory in 17:30.2.

In the girls race, Thetford Academy won the team title with 21 points. Individually, White River’s Anita Miller won in 20:42.6.
