St. John & Masciarelli Pick Up Wins For Cross Country At Hokie Open


BLACKSBURG, VA.—Tar Heels Walker St. John and Sydney Masciarelli took individual top honors as University of North Carolina cross country runners won both the women’s and men’s cross country races at the Hokie Open on Friday.

St. John captured first place in the 6K men’s race in a time of 18:19.1. Tar Heels grabbed five of the top nine finishes in the men’s race. After St. John’s win, Michael Spragley was fourth in 18:48.6, Jesse Hunt was fifth in 18:49.8, Sully Shelton was eighth in 18:56.3 and Jason Thomson was ninth in 19:10.2.

Carolina’s only two entrants dominated the 4K women’s race as Masciarelli picked up the win in 14:01.8 and Sarah Trainor was second in 14:13.8.

The full Tar Heel squad will return to action next Friday November 11 at the NCAA Southeast Regional in Louisville, Ky.
