Five things to know: Badgers travel to NCAA Great Lakes Regional


MADISON, Wis.—The No. 8 Wisconsin men’s cross country team continues postseason action with the 2022 NCAA Great Lakes Regoinal on Friday, Nov. 11. The men’s 10K is set to start at 10 a.m. CT, an hour after the women’s 6K is set to start at the Lavern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course in Terre Haute, Indiana. 

1. LOOK OUT FOR NATIONALS: The Badgers look to qualify for next week’s NCAA championship in Stillwater, Oklahoma as the top-two teams in each region automatically head to the NCAA Championship. The Badgers enter this weekend’s regional meet ranked No.1 in the Great Lakes Region with Notre Dame, Michigan, Butler, and Michigan State behind them. 

2. SUPER SEASON: The 2022 campaign has been another stellar season for the Badgers with three team titles, including the program’s 53rd conference title at the 2022 Big Ten Cross Country Championship in Ann Arbor, Michigan. It also marked UW’s fifth-straight conference title. The Badgers also won their season-opening meet, the Badger Open, and the Roy Griak Invitational and also placed seventh at the prestigous Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational Presented by Under Armour.  

3. LEAD THE WAY LIKING: A name echoing the halls here at Wisconsin is Bob Liking. The junior has had impressive season, leading the Badgers twice this season. Liking led the way for the Badgers at the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational with a top-five finish against some of the top runners in the country. Liking also clinched his second Big Ten cross country title, winning with a time of 23 minutes, 48.9 seconds. Liking is just the eighth Badger to win multiple Big Ten individual crowns, joining the likes of UW legends Ollie Hoare, Morgan McDonald and Simon Bairu. 

4. MICK THE MAN OF THE YEAR! : Wisconsin’s Cross Country and Track & Field Director, Mick Byrne, was named Big Ten Men’s Cross Country Coach of Year for the 12th time of his career. Byrne holds the record for the most men’s cross country coach of the year honors in league history.
