INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — The No. 28-ranked University of Michigan men’s cross country team has been selected to compete at the upcoming NCAA Cross Country Championships, it was announced Saturday evening (Nov. 12) during the NCAA selection show.
After emerging from the NCAA Great Lakes Regional on Friday (Nov. 12) with a third-place finish in a battle against Notre Dame and Butler, the Wolverines were granted one of the 13 at-large berths up for grabs for those teams that did not finish in the top two at one of the nine regionals around the country.
The NCAA meet is scheduled for next Saturday (Nov. 19) at 10:10 a.m. CST at the Greiner Family OSU Cross Country Course in Stillwater, Okla. The race will be broadcast live on ESPNU.
This will be Michigan’s third consecutive championships appearance championships in a row after it was unable to qualify as a team in the 2020-21 season due to the timing of a U-M athletics-wide COVID-19 shutdown. This season, they will join the Wolverine women in Stillwater after they qualified for the 21st consecutive season.
The process for deciding at-large berths comes down to the accumulation of head-to-head victories over teams that qualified for nationals, up to and including the regional meet.
Michigan performed up to expectations in a series of regular-season contests at Notre Dame and Wisconsin, setting itself up for a strong postseason run. At the Big Ten Championships, the Wolverines finished as the runner-up to Wisconsin.
On Friday (Nov. 10) at regionals, the Maize and Blue stayed strong throughout the race and fought off Butler and and in-state rival Michigan State to earn an at-large spot.
