INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — The No. 21-ranked University of Michigan women’s cross country team on Saturday (Nov. 12) earned an at-large bid to compete at the upcoming NCAA Cross Country Championships. The appearance will be the 21st in a row for the Wolverines.

The championships meet will be held next Saturday (Nov. 19) at the Greiner Family OSU Cross Country Course in Stillwater, Okla. The race will begin at 9:29 a.m. CST and will be broadcast live on ESPNU.

Michigan was third in a hotly contested NCAA Great Lakes Regional on Friday (Nov. 11), narrowly missing an automatic berth to nationals by five points. The Wolverines used a strong final kilometer to overcome No. 17 Toledo, in-state rival No. 19 Michigan State, No. 22 Wisconsin to earn third overall.

Despite not earning the automatic berth, the Wolverines will compete in its 28th NCAA Championships meet over the past 30 seasons. Michigan’s streak of 21 consecutive appearances is the third-longest active streak in the nation behind Stanford and Michigan State.

The process for determining at-large berths comes down to the accumulation of head-to-head victories over teams that qualified for nationals, up to and including the regional meet.

Michigan totaled enough head-to-head victories in the regular season at the Cowboy Jamboree and Nuttycombe Invitational to secure the at-large berth. At the Big Ten Championships, the Wolverines finished second behind Michigan State, which they defeated Friday.

The Wolverines have already run the NCAA Championships course, as they took part in the Cowboy Jamboree on Sept. 24. The Maize and Blue finished 10th in the 20-team field.
