Alabama Women’s Distance Contingent Set for BU Opener


TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Alabama track and field is sending a contingent of women’s distance runners to compete at the Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener Saturday in Boston, Mass., on the Boston University campus at Boston University’s Track and Tennis Center.

Alabama is sending All-Americans Flomena Asekol, Amaris Tyynismaa, Mercy Chelangat and Hilda Olemomoi to kick off their 2022-23 indoor season in Boston. All four women were instrumental in the Crimson Tide winning both the SEC and NCAA South Regional Cross Country Championships as well as finishing a program-best third at the 2022 NCAA Championships.

The Lineup

About Alabama

  • All four of this weekend’s Crimson Tide lineup earned All-America honors as members of UA’s third-place team at the 2022 NCAA Cross Country Championships
  • Hilda Olemomoi earned First Team All-America honors with her sixth-place finish at the NCAA Championships after placing third at both the SEC Championships and NCAA South Region Championships
  • Amaris Tyynismaa earned Cross Country All-America honors for the second time in her career after placing ninth at the NCAA Championships, following up on her fifth place finish at the SEC Championships and second-place finish at the NCAA South Region Championships
  • Flomena Asekol also earned her second-career Cross Country All-America accolades after placing 14th at the NCAA Cross Country Championships, which followed her seventh and fifth place finishes at the SEC Championships and NCAA South Region Championships, respectively
  • Mercy Chelangat earned her third-career Cross Country All-America honor with her 16th place finish at the NCAA Cross Country Championships after she earned second place at the SEC Championships and fourth at the NCAA South Region Championships

Next Up

  • Following the BU Opener, Alabama will travel to Nashville, Tenn., to compete in the Commodore Challenge January 13-14 to get the 2022-23 indoor season started in earnest
