Sean Carlson Agrees To Contract Extension Through 2028

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — After a phenomenal debut season leading the Vols and Lady Vols on the cross country course, Tennessee head coach and director of cross country/distance Sean Carlson has agreed to a contract extension through the 2027-28 athletic season.

“In Sean’s introductory press conference, he emphasized his commitment to restoring Tennessee back to one of the premier cross country/distance programs in the country,” Tennessee Vice Chancellor/Director of Athletics Danny White said. “And it’s impossible to not be impressed with the progress our programs have made in less than a year under his leadership. His student-athletes are steadily developing and improving—as evidenced by an NCAA South Region title and top-20 finish at the NCAA Championships—and he’s attracting elite runners who are excited to be a part of what we’re building here on Rocky Top.”

In his first six months at Tennessee, Carlson led the men’s cross country team to heights the Big Orange had not seen in more than two decades. The Vols took second at the SEC Championships, won the NCAA South Region title and finished 20th at the NCAA Championships—representing UT’s best team placement at the national meet for the men since 1995.

Carlson led a young Lady Vol roster to sixth- and fifth-place finishes at the SEC and regional competitions, respectively. His staff recently signed a class loaded with state champions that will set the foundation for a bright future for the women of Tennessee.

“I am beyond humbled by the support I have received from Danny White and our whole athletic department at Tennessee,” Carlson said. “Our administration is committed to innovating in track and field and cross country in unparalleled ways.

“Together we will show that the University of Tennessee can be the premier distance program in the SEC and one of the very best in the nation.”

Carlson’s athletes received numerous individual honors throughout the 2022 cross country campaign, including four All-SEC, eight All-Region and two All-America certificates. Graduate transfer Dylan Jacobs was tabbed the USTFCCCA South Region Men’s Athlete of the Year, and Carlson picked up South Region Men’s Coach of the Year honors for his third career regional coaching award.

Prior to Tennessee, Carlson spent 10 years at Notre Dame, transforming its distance group into one of the nation’s elite. During his stay in South Bend, Indiana, he guided athletes to four American collegiate records, 13…
