TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Four members of the Alabama track and field women’s distance squad got the 2022-23 indoor season off to a strong start Saturday at the Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener in Boston University’s Track and Tennis Center.
Flomena Asekol, Amaris Tyynismaa, Mercy Chelangat and Hilda Olemomoi all followed Cross Country All-America seasons with outstanding opening performance in Boston. Asekol and Olemomoi both broke school records, while all four women posted career-best times in their respective events
The Crimson Tide in Boston
- Flomena Asekol opened Alabama’s indoor season by winning in the mile with a school-record run of 4:32.84
- With her new career-best mark, Asekol trimmed nearly a half second off the previous mark
- With her record time, Asekol became the first UA woman under 4:33.0 in the mile
- Hilda Olemomoi (15:17.97) and Mercy Chelangat (15:18.12) both went under the previous 5,000-meter school record to take second and third, respectively, among collegians in the meet
- Olemomoi knocked more than 15 seconds off the previous school 5,000-meter mark, and she and Chelangat are ranked first and second all-time at UA, respectively
- Amaris Tyynismaa posted a time of 8:55.52 to take sixth in the 3,000-meters race
- With her mark in the 3,000, Tyynismaa became just the second UA woman under nine minutes in the event
Next Up
- Following the BU Opener, Alabama will travel to Nashville, Tenn., to compete in the Commodore Challenge January 13-14 to get the 2022-23 indoor season started in earnest
