Five events to watch: UW competes at Badger Midwest Invitational

MADISON, Wis

. – The Wisconsin men’s track and field team competes this Saturday in Chicago at the Gately Stadium for the Badgers Midwest Invitational. Field events begin at 11:45 a.m. and running events start at 2:25 p.m. The Badgers take on Illinois, Milwaukee, Purdue, and Southern Illinois in the meet.
 
Here are the five events to watch:
 
1. BACK TO COMPETITION: The Badgers continue their 2022-23 indoor season up after opening the season last month in Iowa City, Iowa, at the Jimmy Grant Invitational. Wisconsin athletes set multiple personal bests, including Lawrence Johnson and Elliott Harris in the 300 meters.
 
2. LOOK AT THEM THROWS: Grad student Sam Coil will be competing this weekend along with three other teammates. Coil is third at UW in the weight throw with a toss of 71-2 ¾. Also competing will be outdoor shot put school record holder Andrew Stone, who also ranks second indoors at 65-0 ½. Stone competed in his first NCAA Championship in 2022, earning honorable mention All-America honors with his ninth-place finish. Redshirt junior Jason Swarens is third all-time at UW in the shot put with a toss of 63-4 ¾ and sixth at UW with a throw of 66-7 ¾ in the weight throw. Redshirt freshman Jake Schaefer also makes his Badger debut this weekend.
 
3. SPRINT THE WAY: Senior Lawrence Johnson looks to set the UW record in the 60 meters this season. The Waunakee native currently ranks second in 6.56, just .01 seconds away from tying with Demi Omole (6.55). Johnson earned first team All-American honors last year at the NCAA Indoor Championships, running his personal best of 6.56 to finish fourth. Also competing this week is freshman Giovanni Wearing, who placed sixth with a PR of 22.82 in the 200 meters at the 2022 NSAF Meet of Champions. Freshman Jalen Williams is also set to compete this weekend.
 
4. GOING THE (MIDDLE) DISTANCE:  Badgers Derick Peters, Nick Hruskoci, Liam Belson and others are set to compete this week in the middle distance events. Redshirt senior Peters won the Badger Open during the 2022 cross country season. Hruskoci was a top-30 finisher in the 1500-meter race at the 2021 Big Ten Outdoor Championships and a member of the DMR who placed second at the 2021 Fighting Illini Big Ten Relays.
