BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia men’s and women’s track and field teams traveled to the Virginia Tech Invitational to open the new year as the Jacob Lemmon and Kyle Mosteller started their seasons with victories on the opening day of the competition.
Lemmon opened his 2023 campaign with an personal-best performance in the weight throw as he won his first competition of the season throwing 20.47 meters (67’2”), a mark that ranks third on Virginia’s all-time performance list. John Fay got his season off the mark with a fourth-place finish in the event hitting 18.31 meters (60’1”).
On the track, Peter Djan continued his impressive start to his collegiate career. Djan placed second in the 60-meter hurdles posting a time of 8.05. His time stands as the eighth-fastest in Virginia history, and the third fastest among freshman. David Frasier took fourth in the event clocking 8.14. Frasier’s time puts him at No. 10 on the Virginia all-time performance list and fourth among freshman.
In the women’s 60-meter dash, Jada Seaman and Kayla Bonnick placed third and fourth respectively while Sarah Akpan took seventh place. Combined athlete, Alix Still placed fifth in the 60-meter hurdles.
Jordan Hardy entered the campaign on a strong note as she logged a personal-best mark in the triple jump (12.46 meters / 40’10.5”) placing third in the event. Hardy picks up right where she left off following her sixth-place finish at the ACC Outdoor Championships last season.
In the unseeded pole vault competitions, Maya Maloney placed second as she cleared 3.90 meters (12’9.5”). Sam Romano made her Virginia debut as she took fifth place in the event clearing 3.75 meters (12’3.5”) which ties her for the tenth-best mark in Virginia history.
On the men’s side, Kyle Mosteller started his season with a victory. With a final height of 4.90 meters (16’.75”) Mosteller took first place in the event. His time ranks No. 10 on the UVA all-time list.

The Virginia Tech Invitational will resume tomorrow (Jan. 14) at 11 a.m. beginning with the women’s high jump and women’s pole vault.
