BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Cavaliers closed out competition at the Virginia Tech Invitational as Alex Sherman logged an individual victory while the relay teams took three out of four races on the final day of action at Rector Field House on Saturday afternoon.
Sherman started 2023 with a bang, as the sophomore won the 400-meter dash posting a personal-best time of 47.90. The time moves Sherman up to ninth on the Virginia all-time performance list. On the women’s side, Abby Comella took home a fourth-place finish in the event.
In the 200-meter dash Jada Seaman took second place overall in the event while freshman Sarah Akpan topped her heat to take fifth in the event while Kayla Bonnick took eighth. On the men’s side of the 200 meters, Jay Pendarvis also snagged a runner-up finish posting a time of 21.74 seconds.
The Cavaliers swept the men’s and women’s Distance Medley Relays at the Virginia Tech Invitational as a Cavalier squad of Esther Seeland, Emily Alexandru, Keara Seasholts and Ellie Desmond clocked 11:24.37. On the men’s side, a foursome of Conor Murphy, Jerlan Fish, James Donahue and Derek Johnson turned in a time of 9:37.44 to win the event.
The Cavaliers also took home a win in the 4×400-meter relay as a team of Emily Alexandru, Azhelika Parenchuk, Alahna Sabbakhan and Keara Seasholtz posted a time of 3:45.23.
In the women’s shot put, Ashley Anumba placed third with a mark of 15.16 meters (49’9”) in her first outing of the new season. Following Anumba in fourth was Janae Profit who turned in a personal-best mark of 14.79 meters (48’6.25”). Brooke Lumpkin placed sixth in her Virginia debut.
In the women’s high jump, combined athlete Alix Still took third clearing 1.65 meters (5’5”) while Carly Tarentino took sixth with her mark of 1.60 meters (5’3”).
