Vanderbilt Track and Field | Records Fall on First Day

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — A pair of school records were set as the Vanderbilt women’s track and field team began its indoor season Friday with day one of the Commodore Challenge at the David Williams II Recreation and Wellness Center.

Taiya Shelby and Koshi Umerah headlined the day with a school records while several other Commodores posted results that are among the best in program history.

Shelby, a second-team All-America honoree last year during both the indoor and outdoor seasons, finished the 600 meters in 1:29.06, taking more than two seconds off the Vanderbilt record that was set in 1998. This is the third indoor distance Shelby holds the school record for after setting the marks for 300 and 400 meters in 2022.

Two other running events Friday each featured a pair of Commodores adding their name to the Top 10 ledger.

In the 1,000 meters, Haley Walker ran a 2:52.70, which is eighth-fastest in program history while Audrey Allman’s 2:53.56 is 10th. The event also saw Julia Rosenberg clock a personal best at 2:54.04.

Brooke Overholt ran the third-fastest 300 meters in Vanderbilt history at 39.08 while Madyson Wilson posted the fifth-best time at 39.85.

Umerah, a freshman, paced the field events with a Vanderbilt record in weight throw at 19.01 meters, which improves on the previous mark of 17.82 that was set in 2004.

Jada Sims had her career-best indoor high jump at 1.73 meters, which was fourth-best of the day and is No. 6 in the program’s history.

In long jump, Beatrice Juskeviciute finished fourth with a personal best of 5.75 meters which is tied for fifth-longest in school history.

The Commodore Classic continues Saturday with field events beginning at 11 a.m. and the running events getting underway at noon.
