Tar Heels Dominate Mile Run On Day 1 Of Hokie invitational


BLACKSBURG, VA.—The University of North Carolina indoor track and field teams got strong performances from men and women in the mile run on the first day of the Hokie Invitational on Friday on the campus of Virginia Tech.
 
The Tar Heels dominated the women’s one-mile run, taking the top three finishes behind strong efforts by Taryn Parks (4:38.70), Carlee Hansen (4:41.14) and Brynn Brown (4:41.63).
 
Meanwhile, Ethan Strand finished second in the men’s mile run, topping six Tar Heel men in the top 12 finishers in the event.
 
The Hokie Invitational will continue Saturday in Blacksburg.
 
 
TAR HEEL HIGHLIGHTS
•Ethan Strand finished second in the men’s one mile in 3:59.83. Carolina dominated the event, placing six of the top 12 finishers: Patrick Anderson (seventh), Michael Spragley (eighth), John Tatter (ninth), Aiden Neal (10th) and Sully Shelton (12th).
• Blaise Atkinson finished fourth in the men’s 60m hurdles in a time of 8.11.
• Jesse Hunt took second place in the men’s 1000m in 2:20.86.
• Senior Troy Yearwood had his second consecutive third-place finish in the weight throw with a distance of 20.03m. James Joycey was seventh with a throw of 19.06m.
• Jordan Fong took third place in the women’s weight throw with an 18.21m effort.
• Freshman Peyton Berryman won the unseeded women’s pole vault with a 3.93m vault.
