Vanderbilt Track and Field | Sights Set on Louisville

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The Vanderbilt women’s track and field team will make its first road trip of the spring after back-to-back home meets when it travels to participate Friday and Saturday in the Louisville’s PNC Lenny Lyles Invitational.

“The first two meets this season involved gradual implementation of what we call our ‘championship’ events for a lot of our student-athletes,” said Althea Thomas, director of track and field. “With us traveling this weekend, we are going to enter a mode where we really are hitting some paces and goals in our main events that were set at the beginning of the season.”

Joining Vanderbilt and meet host Louisville this weekend will be UAB, Austin Peay, Eastern Illinois, Eastern Kentucky, Illinois State, Indiana State, Lipscomb, Marshall, Memphis, Michigan, Michigan State, Murray State, Notre Dame, Oakland, Pittsburgh, Purdue, South Florida, Virginia Tech, Western Kentucky, and Xavier.

“Our expectation is that as we travel for the first time that we will be able to handle the rigors of being away from home and meet the challenge presented by different opponents,” Thomas said “We’re not going far away, but it’s a little different region so we’ll see Big Ten and ACC foes in anticipation of the competition that we will face as we ultimately prepare for the SEC Championships.”

In two home meets earlier this month, a trio of Vanderbilt school records were broken. Beatrice Juskeviciute scored a record 4,084 points in the pentathlon, Kosi Umerah set the weight throw mark at 19.02 meters, and Taiya Shelby posted a record 1:29.06 in the 600 meters.

The Commodores also picked up a pair of 4×400-meter relay wins in those first two meets while more than 20 individual performances were among the top 10 in school history.

Field events will begin at 10 a.m. on both days of the competition at Louisville while running events will start at 3:20 p.m. Friday and at 11 a.m. Saturday.
