Duke Tallies Seven Top-Five Program Marks


STATE COLLEGE, Pa. – Duke track and field registered another impressive showing on Friday as the opening day of competition at the Penn State National Open saw the Blue Devils post seven top-five program marks and win a pair of events.
 
Sophomores Amina Maatoug and Chyler Turner each produced top-five times in route to winning their respective events while Abby Geiser, James Lee, Jordyn Shubrick, Lauren Tolbert and Beck Wittstadt etched their names onto the all-time Duke charts with strong performances of their own.
 
TOP PERFORMANCES

  • After running 8.50 seconds in the 60m hurdles first round to win her heat and earn an automatic qualifier to the event semis, Chyler Turner took her performance to the next level as she followed that up with a personal-best showing to rewrite the Duke record books.
  • Turner tied the program’s third-fastest 60m hurdle time as she clocked 8.34 seconds in the semifinal to punch her ticket to the next round. In the final, she ran her way to a first-place finish via a time of 8.36 seconds.
  • Amina Maatoug turned in another stellar performance and showed once more that she is a force to be reckoned with. Competing in the 800m for the first time this season, Maatoug positioned herself at the front of the pack from the jump and never fell outside the top-five runners in the field, finishing the race in 2:04:42 to win the event and slot herself No. 2 all-time on the Duke charts.
  • Maatoug wasn’t the only Blue Devil to shine in the 800m as Lauren Tolbert finished right on Maatoug’s heels via a spectacular showing of her own.
  • Tolbert got off to a fast start and inserted herself among the top-three runners, where she remained throughout the duration of the race. The freshman finished as runner-up behind a time of 2:04.99 – the fourth-fastest time in Duke history.
  • Sophomore Abby Geiser booked her spot in the 60m dash finals following finishes of 7.46 seconds and 7.53 seconds in the first and semifinal rounds, respectively.
  • Geiser saved her best race for last, dashing her way to a runner-up finish after clocking a personal best of 7.44 seconds. The time put Geiser at No. 2 in Duke lore, just .01 off of the school record.
