Huskies Divide, Look To Conquer Four Road Meets

SEATTLE – Washington Track & Field goes its separate ways this weekend, branching out from the Dempsey and sending a total of 23 athletes to four different meets over this Friday and Saturday, Feb. 3-4.

The Huskies will be competing at the New Mexico Collegiate Classic in Albuquerque, the Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational in Lincoln, Neb., the Bruce Lehane Scarlet & White Invitational in Boston, and Brian Fay will cap it off at the New Balance Indoor Grand Prix, where he will race an elite field of pro and college athletes in the 3,000-meters with NBC airing the meet on live TV.

In New Mexico, the Huskies will have a group of throwers and sprinters. Beatrice Asomaning, MaKayla Kelby, Kaia Tupu-South, and Jayden White will throw the shot and weight outside of the Dempsey for the first time this year. Sprinters will look for some fast times in the thin air, with Jonathan Birchman, Cass Elliott, Daniel Gaik, Danielle Hunter, Anthony Smith, and Matthew Wilkinson in action.

Nebraska will feature the Husky multi-eventers competing in their first pentathlon and heptathlons of the season, plus three women’s pole vaulters. Ida Eikeng will contest the pentathlon on Friday, and Ollie Thorner, Jami Schlueter, and Bruno Comin Pescador will take on the heptathlon over Friday and Saturday. Nastassja Campbell, Sara Borton, and Sarah Ferguson will all vault on Friday.

In Boston, at the Bruce Lehane Scarlet & White Invite, hosted by Boston University, the Dawgs will have five of their mid-distance crew looking to put up an NCAA qualifier in the DMR on Friday night, then potentially doubling back for individual events on Saturday. The DMR lineup is expected to feature Sophie O’Sullivan, Marlen Preigh, Carley Thomas, and Anna Gibson, with Chloe Foerster on the trip as well and entered in the open 800m.

Fay will be in Boston but at a different track for Saturday’s prestigious New Balance Grand Prix. That meet takes place at the TRACK at New Balance, a brand new facility at the company’s headquarters. The meet will be shown live in the United States on NBC and the NBC Sports App on Saturday from 1PM to 3PM PST. Fay ranks No. 2 in the NCAA in the mile and No. 6 in the 5k and would like a top-10 mark in the 3k to add to that list.
