McMorris Sets Three Facility Records

Senior Multis Star Etches Name Into Podium History

SPOKANE, WASH. – California track & field’s largest multi-event squad in years made its season debut on Thursday at the WSU Open, sending five athletes to The Podium in Spokane, Wash., to compete in either the heptathlon or pentathlon and, ideally, continue the stellar start to the Bears’ 2023 indoor campaign.

To that end, Day One of the two-day competition was a resounding success. Senior Hakim McMorris put himself firmly in the lead in the men’s heptathlon contest with a stunning day featuring three multi-event facility records (60m – 6.84; long jump – 7.04m/23-1.25; shot put – 14.31m/46-11.5) and three personal bests (60m; shot put; high jump – 2.01m/6-7) on the way to a four-event total of 3323 points. Sophomore Riley Knott also acquitted himself well with three PRs of his own and a second-place tie with Morris in the high jump, ending the day with 2926 points; meanwhile, seniors Cole Whatley (2840 points) and Jono Pelusi (2550 points) rounded out Cal’s men, with the former taking third place in the shot put at 13.49m (43-7.25).

Freshman Torre Anderson was the lone competitor for the Bears in the pentathlon, finishing with a total of 3189 points.

Cal’s four heptathletes will take on their final three events tomorrow at 11:00 a.m. PT, beginning with the 60m hurdles.
