DURHAM – Duke track and field sophomore Amina Maatoug picked up ACC Women’s Track Performer of the Week honors following her record-breaking performance at the JDL Camel City Invite this past weekend. Maatoug took down her second individual and third overall school record of the year.
After shattering the program record in the women’s 3,000m to open the indoor season and helping the women’s distance medley relay squad dismantle the 10-year-old school record in the DMR last weekend, Maatoug delivered another outstanding performance on Saturday in the women’s elite mile. The Leiden, Netherlands product made crafty moves at the beginning of the race before positioning herself among the top two – a spot she would hold through the remainder of the race.
Maatoug clocked a final time of 4:32.54 – No. 2 in the NCAA – to finish as runner up, breaking the Camel City Invite collegiate record in the event while also taking down the previous 12-year-old Duke record set by Kate Van Buskirk in 2011 in the process.
The Blue Devils will split into two groups as several members of the team will head to Nashville, Tenn., for the Music City Challenge while others make the trek to Clemson, S.C., to compete in the Tiger Paw Invitational. Both events are scheduled for Feb. 10-11.
