BERKELEY –

Heading into week three of the season after a red-hot start, California track & field faces its biggest challenge yet as the squad splits into two, sending the majority of its competitors to Albuquerque, N.M., for the Don Kirby Invitational and 10 distance runners to Seattle for the Husky Classic. Both meets are scheduled to run from Feb. 10-11.

To date, the 2023 Golden Bears have accumulated 24 top 10 marks and 2 program records, the latter set by Gavin Schurr (21.21 – men’s 200m) and Aysha Shaheed (23.81 – women’s 200m) two weeks ago in Albuquerque at the New Mexico Team Open. Both are expected to compete again this weekend, as well as 23 other athletes who currently own top-10 program marks. Four other Bears – sophomores Yuki Hamachi, Masina Mayo and Christian Trapps, as well as freshman Jayden Hill – will compete for the first time in a Cal uniform.

“We have high expectations for this meet – the competition is going to be at an entirely new level this week,” Director of Track & Field/Cross Country Robyne Johnson said. “We’re looking for everyone to reach the potential that we know they each have.”

Cal’s men are currently ranked No. 4 in the West Region, while the women are ranked at No. 8. The Bears’ ationally ranked event squads include the men’s pole vault (No. 11), the women’s pole vault (No. 12), the men’s high jump (No. 17), the women’s 60m hurdles (No. 22) and the men’s 60m hurdles (No. 25).
