NEW YORK — After setting an American Collegiate record in the 5k two weeks prior, Tennessee graduate student Dylan Jacobs ran the second-fastest 3k in collegiate history Saturday evening at the 115th Millrose Games in New York City. The Orland Park, Illinois, native finished with a time of 7:36.89, just 0.47 seconds shy of the all-time collegiate standard.
Jacobs ran alongside several Olympians and World Championship qualifiers at the meet and left The Armory with a school record, SEC record and his second all-time top 10 performance after running the No. 3 5k in collegiate history with a time of 13:11.01 at the Boston University Terrier Classic on Jan. 27. He joins teammate Yaseen Abdalla on the collegiate top 10 in the 3,000-meter after Abdalla clocked a time of 7:42.23 that same night in Boston.
Tennessee distance coach Sean Carlson has guided three athletes to all-time top 10 performances in the indoor 3k. Jacobs grabbed the No. 2 spot with his performance on Saturday, while Abdalla ranks No. 9 on the list with his mark set in January. In Carlson’s previous stint at Notre Dame, Yared Nuguse set a collegiate record of 7:38.13 last season that holds up today as the No. 3 time in NCAA history.
The Big Orange distance squad also had a trio of men’s 5k runners at the David Hemery Valentine Invitational in Boston, with all three Vols coming away with PRs. Graduate student Nate Kawalec ran 13:46.76 for a 53-second personal-best to become the No. 3 performer in school history, while Eli Nahom moved to No. 7 on Tennessee’s all-time list with a lifetime-best clocking of 13:57.71, 50 seconds faster than his previous PR. Fifth-year senior Karl Thiessen rounded out the group with a time of 14:07.17 to top his personal-best by six seconds, and he now stands as the No. 12 performer in UT history in the indoor 5k.
At the Music City Challenge in Nashville, two Lady Vols tallied PRs for the Big Orange distance squad. Emma Kate Hamby finished the unseeded 3k in 10:07.94, while Carolyn Barksdale posted her second PR in as many days with a time of 2:11.14 for fifth place in the 800-meter run.
UP NEXT: The Tennessee distance program will conclude the 2022-23 regular indoor season at the Alex Wilson Invitational (South Bend, Ind.) with a DMR group looking to post an NCAA Championship qualifying time. The meet runs Saturday, Feb. 18 at Meyo Field.
