ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Tara Davis-Woodhall said Friday that she could identify and sympathize with the emotions Anna Hall experienced Thursday at the conclusion of the pentathlon competition at the USATF Indoor Championships, coming so close to a career milestone, only to miss the target by a fraction.

Despite producing the best indoor long jump by an American female athlete in seven years, Davis-Woodhall was left to imagine what could have been after just missing a 7-meter performance, winning her first U.S. national title with a 22-11.25 (6.99m) effort at the Albuquerque Convention Center.

“I’m, like, feeling Anna Hall right now,” Davis-Woodhall said. “I know what she felt (Thursday) for that world record, because (the frustrating difference of) 6.99m and 7 meters. It’s like 7 meters is right there. But I know it’s coming, it’s February and big marks are coming soon.”

Hall returned Friday to win her qualifying heat in the 400 meters in 53.66 seconds to advance to Saturday’s final.

Davis-Woodhall, 23, equaled the No. 4 all-time American indoor competitor and matched No. 19 performer in global indoor history with her world-leading mark that also tied the 2011 facility record achieved by Janay DeLoach-Soukup.

Davis-Woodhall, who has produced multiple 7-meter outdoor jumps in her career, improved on her previous-best indoor mark of 22-9 (6.93m) from the 2021 NCAA Division 1 Indoor Championships in Arkansas.

Rhesa Foster, a former Oregon All-American and Nike professional athlete, achieved a personal-best 21-9 (6.63m) to place second, with Tiffany Flynn taking third at 21-6.75 (6.57m) and two-time indoor…
