Alabama’s Mercy Chelangat Named SEC’s Indoor Track and Field Women’s Scholar Athlete of the Year

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Alabama’s Mercy Chelangat was named the Southeastern Conference’s 2023 Indoor Track and Field Women’s Scholar Athlete of the Year, the league office announced Wednesday.

The announcement marks the first time since Daija Lampkin in 2020 that a Crimson Tide athlete has won the award for the women’s program.

Mercy Chelangat, SEC Scholar Athlete of the Year

1. Maintains a 3.85 grade point average and earned her degree in public health in May 2022
2. Also pursuing a second degree in communication

1. Currently ranked third nationally in the 5,000m and No. 8 nationally in the 3,000m
2. 2022 NCAA 10,000m champion
3. 2022 USTFCCCA Outdoor Track Scholar Athlete of the Year.
4. 2020 NCAA Cross Country Champion
5. CoSIDA Academic All-American accolades and was named the 2020-21 USTFCCCA National Cross Country Scholar-Athlete of the Year
6. Earned the 2021 SEC Women’s Cross Country Scholar-Athlete of the Year

Chelangat and the Crimson Tide begin postseason action this weekend in Fayetteville, Ark., for the SEC Indoor Championships, Feb. 24-25.
