SEATTLE — The University of Colorado track and field program finished up the first day of the Ken Shannon Last Chance Invitational here Friday with four top-five finishes.

The highlight of the day came in the men’s 5,000 with Charlie Sweeney bettering his own second-best mark in CU history. Sweeney finished third in the event in 13:36.09, a second and a half better than his previous personal best. Sweeney may double back in the 3,000 tomorrow.

The CU men had a great opening day with a pair of fifth-place finishes from Tyler Sconce in the weight throw and Ian Gilmore in the 200. Sconce threw 19.14 meters (62-9.5), leading teammate Matt Ward who finished eighth in 17.58m (57-8.25). Gilmore was the fastest of the three Buffs, crossing in 21.58 seconds. Luc Andrada ran 21.96 while James Milholen ran 22.20, placing 10th and 13th respectively.

On the women’s side, Gya’ni Sami finished fourth in the women’s weight throw with a toss of 18.87m (61-11). Eva Bruce and Jada Green closed out the pentathlon competition with a seventh-place finish from Bruce with 3,755 points while Green finished ninth with 3,680 points.

Action ramps up tomorrow in Seattle with the Buffs in action in more than a dozen events for the regular season finale of the 2023 indoor season.
