Gamecocks Conclude Friday Action at SEC Indoor Championships – University of South Carolina Athletics

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (Feb. 24, 2023) – The first day of the 2023 SEC Indoor Championships is in the books with both Gamecock men and women’s teams scoring three points.

On the men’s side, the three points came from sophomore distance runner Rogerio Amaral who placed sixth overall in the men’s 5,000-meter race. Amaral ran a time of 14:19.11 to secure three points for the Gamecocks.

Two individuals on the men’s team secured spots in the final events tomorrow, including Anass Essayi in the men’s mile after winning his heat with the fastest time in the prelims at 4:02.93. The other individual to advance to Saturday’s finals was Filip Demsar who automatically qualified with a time of 7.71 to place fourth overall in the preliminary rounds.

The women’s team earned three points from the distance medley relay team that set a new program record to end the day. The squad of Alex Costantino, Jahnile Registre, Elena Kelety and Svenja Sommer placed sixth overall with a time of 11:22.59.

Silan Ayyildiz was the lone individual to qualify for the finals tomorrow from the women’s side, placing second in her heat and fourth overall in the women’s mile. The Turkey native ran a time of 4:44.14 to automatically qualify.

Three different individuals on the women’s team also set new personal bests in one of the premier meets in the country. Registre, the second leg of the DMR, ran 53.23 in the women’s 400m for a new personal mark. Kelety, competing in her first SEC Championship meet, posted a time of 2:07.43 for a new personal best. The final new personal mark came from freshman sprinter Makayla Grant who clocked her first sub-25 200m sprint, stopping the clock at 24.76.

South Carolina will close out the 2023 SEC Indoor Championships tomorrow with 11 final events. The first field event will be at 2:15 p.m. for the men’s high jump, while the first track event will be the men’s one-mile final at 4:05 p.m.
