If the performances Wednesday produced by Justine Preisano, Stella Kermes, Charlotte Bell and Alyssa Preisano at the Cutty Season Opener are another impressive indication, the quartet from Cuthbertson High in North Carolina and coach Kirk Walsh could be enjoying a memorable weekend March 10-12 at New Balance Nationals Indoor in Boston.

The Cavaliers wasted little time smashing the state outdoor record in the girls 4×800-meter relay, running 8 minutes, 48.47 seconds on their home track, eclipsing the 2011 mark of 9:01.23 established by Cary High, in addition to elevating to the No. 6 lineup in U.S. prep history.

Cuthbertson’s performance is the fastest achieved by a high school girls quartet in an outdoor 4×800 relay since 2014. Roosevelt High from Maryland has held the national prep all-time outdoor mark of 8:43.12 since 2008.

Justine Preisano opened in 2:12.85, Kermes followed with a 2:10.05 split, Bell ran 2:10.83 on the third leg and Alyssa Preisano anchored in 2:14.74 for the Cavaliers.

Cuthbertson ran 8:57.98 in the 4×800 relay Jan. 14 at the Virginia Showcase to elevate to the No. 8 all-time indoor quartet. The Cavaliers won the 4×800 title at Nike Indoor Nationals last year by clocking 8:59.85 at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex on Staten Island in New York.

Following Wednesday’s effort, Cuthbertson continues to build momentum toward challenging the national high school indoor record of 8:51.93 achieved last year by Ann Arbor Pioneer from Michigan at last year’s New Balance Nationals Indoor meet at The Armory in New York.

The girls 4×800 championship race is scheduled for March 12 at the TRACK at New Balance.
