Dylan Jacobs Tabbed To The Bowerman Watch List

NEW ORLEANS — The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced Thursday afternoon that Tennessee distance runner Dylan Jacobs is one of 10 NCAA Division I athletes on the men’s watch list for The Bowerman award. The graduate student from Orland Park, Illinois, makes his debut on the watch list after recording historically fast times at the 3,000-meter and 5,000-meter distances and securing a pair of gold medals in the 3k and distance medley relay at the SEC Indoor Championships last weekend.

The Bowerman award is the highest individual honor in collegiate track & field, presented annually by the USTFCCCA to the most outstanding male and female athletes in the nation. Tennessee alum Christian Coleman (2014-17) won the award in 2017 following a historic season in which he captured four NCAA titles and set two all-time collegiate records in the indoor 60-meter (6.45) and outdoor 100-meter (9.82).

Jacobs has put together one of the most memorable indoor campaigns in SEC history in his debut season at Tennessee, posting conference records and all-time top five performances in both the indoor 3,000m and 5,000m. His season-best time of 7:36.89 in the 3k is the No. 2 performance in collegiate history and .47 seconds shy of the NCAA record, while his fastest 5k of 13:11.01 stands as the No. 3 all-time collegiate performance.

He starred at his first SEC Championships, winning the 3k in a meet record time of 7:52.49 and closing out Tennessee’s DMR gold medal performance with a 3:56 split over the 1,600-meter leg. His 12.5 points scored led the Vols to a fifth-place finish at the conference meet and were part of 35 points tallied by the UT men’s distance unit.

Jacobs will be the nation’s top seed in the 5k at the NCAA Indoor Championships and enters the national meet ranked No. 2 in the 3k this season. He was tabbed USTFCCCA National Athlete of the Week on Feb. 14 after his record-breaking 3k at The Millrose Games and was honored twice as the SEC Men’s Runner of the Week earlier this season.

Jacobs is the fourth Tennessee athlete to appear on the men’s watch list for The Bowerman, joining Darryl Sullivan (2020), 2017 winner Christian Coleman, and Jake Blankenship (2016).
