One of the most anticipated races of the meet was the 1600 Meter Run that included Audra Soderlind of Oswego, Liv Phillips of Naperville Central, Catherine Sommerfeld of Lyons Township, and Catie McCabe. Soderlind and Sommerfeld both ran earlier in the meet in the 4x800m Relay. The 1600 would be the first race of the meet for the two WSC-Silver distance stars.

Soderlind took the lead and paced the pack through a 2:31 opening half. McCabe had the splints written on her arm and did not match what they were running as they passed through the second 400 in 77 seconds. Just before that halfway point, the Hinsdale senior took off pushing the pace.

The third 400 of the race sped up the pace at 76 seconds. McCabe was slowly pulling away from Soderlind and Sommerfeld as she passed 1200-meters in 3:47. Phillips and Julie Piot of Naperville North were in the next pack.

It was not the fast pace that McCabe wanted in this meet hoping for a time under five-minutes. But the 5:02.55 (IL #4) was fast enough for her to win the race.

“I was hoping to run that kind of split at 800-meters, maybe a little faster,” McCabe said after the meet. “I was a little ambitious with what I wanted to do. I still am happy with my performance.”

Sommerfeld closed the gap on McCabe in the final lap to run 5:04.08 (IL #8) to finish second. Phillips ran 5:07.68 passing Soderlind (5:07.66) to finish fourth. Marley Andelman of St. Charles East moved in the last half of the race to finish fifth (5:13.99) just finishing ahead of Piot (5:15.15).

Sarah Skora was one of those Hinsdale distance winners in this meet in the 800 Meter Run. Addison George of Naperville Central led for most of the fourth section of the event. Skora passed George with 100-meters left in the race to claim her first win in any varsity race. Skora’s time of 2:21.00 edged George (2:21.51), Elayna Boeh of Glenbard West (2:22.02), and Abby Moog of Naperville Central (2:22.41).
