Stimmel and Mammel earn First Team All-American

Albuquerque, N.M. – Virginia Tech men’s and women’s track & field teams opened the 2023 NCAA Indoor Championships with a strong performance in the field on Day One.

Kenna Stimmel claimed fourth place in the women’s pole vault event clearing a height of 14′ 5.25. (4.40m). Stimmel, a freshman from Castalia, Ohio, started the day with a miss on her first attempt. Determined to do well, she came back to clear each of the next four heights with one attempt each. Stimmel’s fourth place finish earns her first team All-American honors.

“I am very proud of how the women competed,” said assistant coach Bob Phillips. “It was a steady meet for Journey and a great meet for Kenna, grabbing fourth place as a freshman. I was particularly proud of Julia Fixsen. She is fighting through a foot injury but did everything she possibly could for us at the meet. It will be nice to give her some time now so we will have her at full strength for the outdoors.”

Senior Rebecca Mammel earned her third career NCAA trophy finishing seventh in the women’s weight throw with a distance of 73′ 11.5″ (22.54m) in the finals. Mammel secured her spot into the finals by throwing 73′ 4.75″ (22.37m) on her third attempt of the day. Mammel’s seventh place finish earns her first team All-American honors.

Lindsey Butler earned an automatic qualifying spot into the women’s mile final finishing third in her heat. Butler crossed the finished line with a time of 4:41.80. The women’s mile final is scheduled to begin at 4:00 p.m. (MT) / 6:00 p.m. (ET).
