ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The University of Michigan men’s track and field team 2023 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships on Saturday (March 11) at the Albuquerque Convention Center, with Nick Foster the lone Wolverine to compete on the men’s side, racing in the mile final.

Foster represented Michigan in the mile final following a fourth place finish in Friday’s preliminaries (March 10). Foster approached the race strategically – a method that served him well in preliminaries – hanging tight to the middle of the pack throughout the first two laps of the race. The miler was forced to fight hard in the race, with Washington’s three man squad sitting back early, before leading the group with a fast kick in the final two laps. Foster ended the race in ninth place with a time of 4:05.58, good for second-team All-American honors which makes him a two-time All-American.

The result marked Foster’s second indoor championship appearance and his first appearance in an individual event. The distance runner’s other appearance came in 2022 as a member of the distance medley relay. Highlights of his 2023 indoor season include a two-second improvement on his career-best — running just a second behind the school record — as well as being part of a school record-setting effort as in the distance medley relay.

With the indoor season now complete, the Wolverines will begin the outdoor portion of the 2023 campaign next week at UCF’s Black and Gold Invitational. Events begin Friday (March 17) and Michigan will be traveling a large squad to compete in the meet.
