FREEPORT, Bahamas — The Commodores opened their outdoor track and field season with a handful of Vanderbilt top-10 performances at the Island Relays Bahamas Invitational on Friday.

On the field, freshman Giavonna Meeks made her collegiate debut in the hammer throw, where she posted a performance ranking third in Vanderbilt history with a 48.67-meter throw.

Freshmen Mya Georgiadis and Allyria McBride’s performances in the 400-meter hurdles also landed them in the Vanderbilt record books, posting times that rank sixth and seventh, respectively, on the event’s top-10 list. Georgiadis finished the race in 59.61 seconds and McBride finished in 1:00.04.

The Dores had four athletes qualify for Saturday’s event finals. Freshman Taylor McKinnon (14.30 seconds) and senior Jada Sims (14.61 seconds) moved on to compete in the 100-meter hurdle finals Saturday at 12:45 p.m. CT. Sims’ time was a career-best.

 On Saturday at 1 p.m. CT, senior Madison Fuller (12.23 seconds) and sophomore Ella Escobar will race in the 100-meter dash finals. Running the event for the first time in her collegiate career, Escobar clocked 12.22 seconds, which is 10th fastest in program history.

Saturday’s action will begin at 9 a.m. CT for field events and 12:15 p.m. CT for running events.
