ORLANDO, Fla. — The University of Michigan men’s track and field team opened the outdoor season Friday (March 17) with day one of the Black and Gold Invitational at the UCF Soccer & Track Complex.

With the highest finish of the day, Henry Sheldon claimed second place in the pole vault, clearing 5.03 meters (16 feet, 6 inches). He took ninth place at this meet last year, showing an impressive improvement since the 2022 outdoor season. Also in the field, freshmen Jake Wall and Luke Stowasser represented the Wolverines in the long jump. This was the collegiate debut for both jumpers, who took sixth and 12th, respectively.

In the throwing events, Zane Forist had a strong day in his first outdoor collegiate meet. The freshman saw two top-10 finishes, competing in the shot put and discus. His shot put throw of 16.49 meters (54 feet, 1.25 inches) landed him a fifth-place finish in a 27-athlete field. Forist also finished seventh in the discus, heaving it 50.79 meters (166 feet, 7 inches). Eli Winter also competed in the discus, taking 11th place. The junior’s best throw of the event was 46.88 meters (153 feet, 9 inches).

On the track, freshman Kelston Richmond saw a 10th-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles his first collegiate outdoor meet with a time of 55.86 seconds. Michigan also had four athletes compete in the 200-meter dash — Dubem Amene, Jacob Koerner, Lawrence Gilliam and Jack Juds. Amene finished 12th with a time 21.27 and Koerner ran an outdoor career-best 21.49 to take 15th place. He was followed by Gilliam (22.05, 36th) and Juds (22.74, 56th).

The Wolverines will continue at the Black and Gold Invitational on Saturday (March 18) at 9 a.m. Action at the UCF Soccer & Track Complex begins with Winter in the hammer throw.
