Outdoor Season Opens - Stanford University Athletics

STANFORD, Calif. – Nine meet records fell at the sixth Cardinal Classic on Saturday at Cobb Track and Angell Field, with two being dropped by Stanford athletes.

Stanford sophomore Garrett Brown, a week removed from placing eighth and earning first-team All-America honors at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships, won the men’s pole vault at 17-6 ½ (5.35m).

And Alexa Rossum, who led off Stanford’s 12th-place 4×400 relay team at NCAA Indoors, won the 200 meters in 23.37.

Stanford appears to have found a sweet spot for the meet, which was established in 2016 as a night meet oriented toward Power Five teams. That format never really caught on and the meet itself was not contested in 2020 or 2021 because of the pandemic.

However, this was the first year of the Cardinal Classic as a day meet featuring mostly Northern California schools. Overall, 17 four-year schools were represented – 14 from Northern or Central California. It worked out to be a perfect competitive environment for an outdoor season opener, and featured enough athletes to provide sections that tested athletes of each level.

Stanford earned eight victories – five for the women and three for the men. Stanford’s women’s winners were Rossum in the 200, Cydney Wright in the 400 (a personal best of 53.63), Grace Connolly in the 5,000 (16:15.04), Samantha Thomas in the 400 hurdles (a PB 1:00.22), and the 4×400 relay team of Thomas, Rossum, Wright, and Anna Tovkach (3:39.11).

Stanford’s men’s winners were Brown in the pole vault, Meika Beaudoin-Rousseau in the 1,500 (a PB of 3:46.84), and Allan Hunter in the long jump (24-1 ¾, 7.36m).

This is the first of three meets Stanford will host this season. The next is the Stanford Invitational on March 31-April 1.
